Language learning

Nowadays it is essential to master one or two foreign languages in order to guarantee full access to the job market.  The Faculty stresses the importance of learning and improving one's command of at least one foreign language.  The process of acquiring such command is both progressive and diversified.

The place of foreign languages in the Law curriculum

Language courses and Law courses in a foreign language

From the 1st year in the Bachelors degree on, it is possible for students to choose between English, Dutch and German. Language teaching in the 1st year consists of a classic language course (not mandatory for students with B1 level) and a law-oriented course. The teaching takes place in small groups in order to allow interactions to take place.

In the 2nd year students have in their programme a course on legal terminology in one of the three languages (on offer: German, English and Dutch).

From the 3rd year on , students are required to take every year a minimum of one Law course in a foreign language (English, Dutch or German).

Maastricht Option

In the 2nd and 3rd year of the Bachelors, students can apply to follow the Maastricht Option. This option consists of taking courses either in English (European and International Law) or in Dutch (Dutch Law) for an equivalent of 30 credits at the University of Maastricht.

In the Masters: a study stay in foreign universities or in the Flemish Speaking Community of Belgium

To improve the quality of their foreign language the Faculty also encourages student mobility in the framework of the Masters by permitting them to carry out a study stay of a semester or one year in the Flemish Speaking Community of Belgium or abroad. Each year some sixty students carry out such a study stay

Supplementary educational programmes

It is also possible for students to take language courses outside of the Faculty. The ULg's Institut Supérieur des Langues Vivantes (ISLV) organises evening classes or distance learning courses, as well as  preparatory courses for the ILEC (an English legal examination organised by the University of Cambridge).
