Maastricht option

This option allows students to take law courses in English (European and international law) or in Dutch (Dutch laws) at the University of Maastricht.

The value of such a step is obvious in that speaking foreign languages is vital for the job market. It is also the opportunity to experience another method of teaching, the courses at Maastricht being given in small groups and demanding very active student participation.

Two possibilities for the students:

  • Taking the Maastricht option in the 2nd year of the Bachelors, continuing it or returning to another option in the 3rd year of the Bachelors;
  • Taking the Maastricht option only in the 3rd year of the Bachelors.

Organisation

The courses at Maastricht are given over two months and are directly followed by an exam (no preparation period). The organisation of the timetable being different in the two universities, certain overlaps between the Maastricht courses and the courses given at Liège cannot be ruled out.

It is imperative that courses given at Maastricht are attended, as the active participation of students (discussions, practical work, assignments, etc.) forms an essential component of these courses. The students might therefore be obliged to not attend certain classes given at the ULg. The timetable of the courses given at Maastricht is known at the beginning of October.

Selecting students

The number of students who can enrol for this option is 5 a year from each study pathway (Dutch-English).

Students who are interested must present to Nathalie Vrancken (B31 - floor +1, office 1.78) a letter of motivation and a CV by September 21. The selection will be made by M. Patrick WAUTELET, full professor, who will take into account language study stays, immersion experiences, motivation, educational background, etc.
